The First Computer I Built
I was 16 when I built my first PC. I saved up for months, researching parts compatibility, watching YouTube tutorials on thermal paste application. The satisfaction of pressing the power button and seeing it boot up for the first time - nothing compared to it.
What Hardware Taught Me
Building computers taught me troubleshooting in a way nothing else could. When something did not work, I could not just refresh the page. I had to open the case, check connections, isolate problems.
That mindset transferred directly to software. When code breaks, you need the same systematic approach. Check the logs. Isolate the variable. Test components individually.
The Repair Years
After building my own PCs, I started fixing others. Friends, family, local businesses. I saw hundreds of machines with hundreds of problems. Some were simple - a loose cable, dust blocking airflow. Others were complex - failing capacitors, corrupted BIOS.
Each repair taught me something about how computers actually work. Not the abstract theory from textbooks, but the practical reality of silicon, electricity, and timing.
The Transition
Eventually, I wanted to create rather than just fix. I started with HTML - simple webpages at first. Then CSS added style. Then JavaScript added interactivity. Each layer revealed a new dimension of creation.
I realized something: the computer I built at 16 and the code I write now are not that different. Both require understanding how components work together. Both require patience when things break. Both require creativity to solve problems.
The Parallel
Hardware people and software people often argue about which is harder. I do not think it matters. Both are crafts. Both require understanding systems. Both benefit from the builder mindset.
If you are starting in tech and feel drawn to hardware - embrace it. That practical knowledge will make you a better software developer. The best engineers I know understand the full stack - from electrons to APIs.
