It Started with Punch Cards

In the 1890s, Herman Hollerith created punch cards to tabulate census data. These cards encoded information with holes. Feed them into a machine, and it could count and sort data faster than any human.

The idea was revolutionary: use physical media to represent information. The same principle underlies everything from early computers to modern SSDs.

The War Years

World War II accelerated everything. The ENIAC in 1945 could calculate artillery trajectories in seconds - work that took humans hours. But it weighed 30 tons and filled a room.

The transistor arrived in 1947. Suddenly, vacuum tubes became obsolete. Electronics could be smaller, more reliable, use less power.

The Personal Computer Revolution

In 1977, the Apple II, Commodore PET, and TRS-80 brought computing home. For the first time, regular people could have computers.

The IBM PC in 1981 established the standard. Microsoft provided the operating system. Intel provided the chips. This partnership dominated for decades.

The Internet Changes Everything

The 1990s brought the World Wide Web. Email replaced letters. Online communities replaced bulletin boards. The door opened to global communication.

By 2000, having a website was essential for businesses. By 2010, it was essential for everyone.

The Mobile Era

The iPhone in 2007 changed computing again. Touch interfaces replaced keyboards. Apps replaced websites. Computing became personal in a new way - always in your pocket, always connected.

The AI Revolution

In 2022, ChatGPT showed the world what large language models could do. Suddenly, AI was accessible to everyone. Not just researchers with GPU clusters - anyone with an internet connection.

Where is this heading? Perhaps toward AI that truly reasons. Perhaps toward interfaces we have not imagined yet. Perhaps toward computing that feels human rather than mechanical.

What This Means

The history of computing is not just interesting - it is useful. Understanding where we came from helps predict where we are going. The trends that shaped the past continue to shape the future.

The question is not whether technology will change. It always has. The question is how we adapt.
